Many organizations struggle to implement a CMMS.  Most often the problem is not the plan, the software or the personnel.  It is a lack of focus on the fundamentals and execution of the basics.  Fortunately, this can be corrected with good coaching.

I was reading a discussion group dialog from an EAM/CMMS sub-group on LinkedIn today.  The question of the day was “what is your definition of a CMMS?”  There were many responses and the question seemed to be drawing quite a few diverse comments.  I thought I’d weigh in on the topic in my blog.

 

Many MPulse employees are active in our community.  Our Cheryl Holmes is very active in the local Girl Scout program here in Eugene Springfield (Oregon).  As you are probably aware the Girl Scouts sell cookies.  They sell a lot of cookies!  Most of us have eaten way too many of these cookies, but we keep coming back for more. 

One of the first rules we learn in the field of maintenance is: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” There are more colorful ways to express the same thought, but let’s not go there.  In most cases, this axiom is spot on and shouldn’t be challenged.  But not always.

As a general management strategy, blind obedience does not work, even if your current system is working at 110%.  Blind obedience to a norm should not be confused with strict adherence to a plan.  Let me illustrate the point with the following story:
